A University of Nevada, Reno
graduate, Clifford Bartl holds a bachelor’s degree
in Education, with major and minor emphases in
mathematics and agricultural/industrial mechanics.
He is ASE Master Certified as a Medium/Heavy Duty
Truck Technician and holds numerous other certifications
in powertrain and engine systems.
In 1993, in conjunction with Truckee Meadows
Community College, Clifford pioneered the Diesel
Power Technology Magnet Program for district
high school students. Today, the program maintains
an unbroken string of gold-medal victories at
the state championship level.
Bartl worked 11 years in the Aerospace and
Defense Industry as a quality and manufacturing
engineer, specializing in advanced composites
and ordnance-related devices. Working with corporations
that produced hardware for the Department of
Defense, the space shuttle and a variety of
other military and commercial aircraft, one
of his chief responsibilities was working directly
with the Defense Contract Administration to
gain approval on multi-million-dollar hardware
shipments.

Karen Fleischmann, a San Francisco
tarnsplant attended the University of Nevada,
Reno, studying abroad for one year in Vienna,
Austria. Stateside, she completed her bachelor's
degree in American History with a minor in Art
History.
After obtaining her substitute teaching license,
Fleischmann began her career as an educator.
Eighteen year later, she’s still teaching and
is happy to be providing real world experience
to ACE students. Prior to her work at ACE, Fleischmann
taught at Alice Taylor Elementary, Greenbrae
Elementary, Dilworth Middle School and North
Valleys High School.

ACE co-founder and native
Nevadan, Ed Horan graduated from University of
Nevada, Reno with a degree in education. Horan
has taught construction for 28 years and is also
active in SkillsUSA—a working partnership of students,
educators and industry—for which he takes students
to the national competition in Kansas City, Mo.
each June. He has won many awards such as the
Nevada Vocational Association’s “Teacher of the
Year” and the Reno Gazette-Journal’s “Best of
Education.”
Horan serves on the Governor’s Commission for
Construction Education and is very active in
the construction industry throughout northern
Nevada.
Over the years, Horan has worked for many homebuilders,
developers and engineering companies. His consulting
business, Construction Plus, specializes in
construction inspections and educational seminars.

Margie Rick joined the teaching
staff at ACE during the school’s inaugural school
year (2002-2003) with experience managing computer
networks. She prides herself on keeping up with
the most current educational trends and information,
and is always taking advantage of continuing education
opportunities related to science and information
technology to the benefit of her ACE students.
Rick holds degrees in resort management, psychology
and hospital administration as well as a master’s
of Science in Educational Technology.
Outside of the classroom Rick keeps busy as
well. Her favorite sporting activity is scuba
diving and currently she has her Divemaster
rating from PADI.

Doug Roix has been teaching
Computer-Assisted Drafting (CAD) techniques since
the mid-’80s, including courses at the AutoCAD
training center in Martinez, Calif. and CADD and
manual drafting for Diablo Valley College in the
Engineering Department from 1991-1995. In 1993,
Doug Roix was awarded AutoCAD’s prestigious title
of “Teacher of the Year” for North America.
Roix got his start as machine and auto shop
instructor at Alhambra High School in Martinez,
Calif. before teaching at Reno High School.
He served four years in the United States Air
Force and holds two Masters degrees: one in
Industrial Arts from San Francisco State University
and a second in School Administration from Saint
Mary’s College.

Susan Strandberg graduated
from University of Nevada, Reno in 1980 with a
Bachelor's degree in Education. She has been teaching
in classrooms in Nevada and California since 1981,
most recently Galena High School. She joined the
faculty at ACE High School in its first year.
In keeping with ACE High School's hands-on
learning approach, Strandberg exposes students
various industries through guest speakers and
job shadowing. She also teaches financial literacy.
